Overview

The Brick House is far more than just a 1976 Valiant 40 sailboat; it is a legendary symbol of the modern cruising lifestyle, brought to life by the global adventures and DIY mastery of Patrick and Rebecca Childress. Originally named Yellow Rose, the vessel was rechristened Brick House by Patrick, who wanted a name that reflected the sturdiness and strength required to face the open ocean. This 40-foot blue-water cruiser, known for its performance in heavy seas, underwent a massive transformation before the couple set off on their 2007 circumnavigation. Patrick meticulously rebuilt the boat, incorporating "bulletproof" upgrades like titanium chainplates and advanced communication gear, turning the vessel into a floating classroom for thousands of aspiring sailors.

The boat’s reputation for resilience was cemented during a harrowing incident in the South Pacific in 2011. While sailing near Kiribati, Brick House was dismasted, leaving the crew stranded in a remote stretch of the ocean. Undeterred, the Childresses managed to motor the crippled vessel over 2,000 miles to the Marshall Islands for repairs—a feat of seamanship that became a cornerstone of their legacy. Through their popular YouTube channel, they shared every mechanical struggle and triumph, making Brick House one of the most recognizable and trusted names in the international sailing community.

The story of Brick House took a poignant turn in 2020 when Patrick passed away in South Africa during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the devastating loss, Rebecca Childress was determined to honor their shared dream. With the help of Captain Michael Hayward, she continued the journey, finally completing the global circumnavigation in May 2023. Today, the vessel stands as a testament to technical excellence, the endurance of the human spirit, and a lifelong love for the sea.

The Valiant 40 is a modern classic, a rugged double-ender designed by Robert Perry that revolutionized the world of blue-water cruising. At first glance, its distinctive "canoe stern" and traditional lines suggest a heavy, slow boat, but the Valiant 40 was actually a pioneer of the "performance cruiser" category. By pairing a traditional, sturdy hull with a modern fin keel and a skeg-hung rudder, Perry created a vessel that could handle the violent motion of the open ocean while maintaining impressive speed and tracking—a combination that made it the first choice for solo circumnavigators and serious offshore couples alike.

Stepping down into the cabin, the layout is a masterclass in functional offshore design, prioritizing safety and comfort while the boat is heeling. The interior is typically rich in warm teak, with handrails positioned exactly where you need them for moving through the boat in heavy seas. Most versions feature a "U-shaped" galley tucked securely to one side of the companionway, allowing the cook to wedge themselves in safely while preparing meals underway. Opposite the galley, a dedicated navigation station serves as the nerve center of the boat, usually situated right next to a cozy quarter-berth that is perfect for a sleeping off-watch crew member to remain near the cockpit.

Moving forward into the main salon, the layout opens into a comfortable living space with deep settees on either side and a sturdy, fold-down table in the center. Because the Valiant 40 was built for long-term living, the storage is exceptional, with lockers and bins tucked into every available inch of the hull. Past the salon, the head is typically located just before the private V-berth in the bow. This forward cabin provides a quiet retreat at anchor, though the boat is famous for its "sea berths" in the middle of the ship where the motion is most stable. Every inch of the Valiant 40 feels intentional, reflecting its reputation as a vessel built not just for the weekend, but for a lifetime at sea.

Broker Notes

Uniflite Corp. built the first 159 VALIANT 40s from 1975 to 1984. During this period (between hull numbers 120 and 249), resin mixtures were changed to include an 'experimental' (fire-retardant?) additive.

This was thought to have caused the blistering that later appeared on many hulls (data source: sailboatdata.com), including Brick House's hull (#134). Brick House currently shows approximately 2 dozen hull blisters, most measuring less than 2 inches in diameter.
